Understanding Level Classification

Level 1: New to the sport or those who have played a little but still struggle with basic volleyball skills. Instruction is slow, detailed, and technique-focused to develop strong fundamentals. (typically 8-14 years old)
Level 2: Player understands basic skills and can perform them with some control. Still inconsistent overall and needs continued focus on technique and repetition. We incorporate movement & footwork. (typically 10-14 years old w/ 1-2 years experience)
Level 3: Comfortable and successful with all core skills—serving, passing, setting, hitting, and defense. Beginning to specialize in a position and developing accuracy, effectiveness, and consistency in play. Applying athleticism to the established skills. (typically 13-16 years old w/ 2-4 years experience)
Level 4: Player is athletic in their movement, has great hand/eye coordination, has a position they are training for and is looking to cement their current skills with maximum reps. They are consistent across all skills with solid control, positioning, and understanding of team systems. A reliable player capable of executing plays at higher speed and trying to achieve them with minimal errors. (typically 14-18 years old w/ 4-6 years experience, college bound mentality)

What clinic should I register for?

The following skill levels are Coach Kevin’s general guidelines for determining the best clinic placement for each athlete.

While these classifications are helpful for most players, every athlete develops at a different pace. Factors such as athleticism, work ethic, coachability, confidence, and overall potential may influence clinic placement. In some cases, Coach Kevin may recommend a different clinic level to ensure the athlete is appropriately challenged and positioned for success.

Level 1 Player

The player is new to volleyball or has limited experience. They are still learning the fundamental skills of serving, passing, setting, hitting, and movement. Ball control is inconsistent, and they require detailed instruction, frequent feedback, and repetition to develop proper technique.

Typical Age: 8-14 years old

Level 2 Player

The player understands the basic skills of volleyball and can perform them with some success. They demonstrate improving ball control but remain inconsistent, especially when movement, speed, technique or decision-making are introduced. The player is developing coordination, footwork, and confidence while continuing to build a strong technical foundation.

Typical Age: 10-14 years old
Typical Experience: 1-2 years

Level 3 Player

The player is comfortable performing all core volleyball skills, including serving, passing, setting, attacking, and defense. They can execute skills with consistency in controlled environments and are learning to apply them at game speed. The player demonstrates athletic movement, understands basic team concepts, and is beginning to develop positional awareness, volleyball IQ, and competitive confidence.

At this stage, players often begin identifying and training for specific positions such as setter, libero, defensive specialist, middle blocker, or outside hitter. They are learning the responsibilities, movements, and decision-making associated with their position while continuing to develop as a complete volleyball player.

Typical Age: 13-16 years old
Typical Experience: 2-4 years

Level 4 Player

The player demonstrates strong athleticism, efficient movement, and consistent execution across all major volleyball skills. They possess solid ball control, strong hand-eye coordination, and a clear understanding of team systems and positional responsibilities. The player can perform skills effectively at higher speeds, make quality decisions under pressure, and consistently contribute in competitive environments while minimizing unforced errors.

Typical Age: 14-18 years old
Typical Experience: 4-6 years
Mindset: Competitive, self-motivated, and focused on maximizing performance and consistency.

Youth Performance Development Clinic

The Youth Performance Development Clinic is designed for players who are comfortable with the basic fundamentals involved in playing volleyball and are ready to take the next step in their volleyball journey. Training moves at a faster pace and introduces more movement, decision-making, and game-like situations. Athletes will continue refining their serving, passing, setting, attacking, and defensive skills while learning how to perform those skills under pressure and at higher speeds. Drills are designed to utilize reflexes, coordination, footwork, body control, and reaction time.

Players will be encouraged to become more aggressive and confident, learning to pursue every ball, communicate effectively, and play with greater intensity. The focus shifts from simply executing skills correctly to executing them consistently while moving, and reacting.

This clinic is ideal for athletes who are comfortable with the fundamentals and are ready to develop the speed, confidence, athleticism, and competitive mindset needed for the next level of play.

Competitive Development Clinic
(All Skills 75)

Competitive Development Clinic – Applying athleticism and technique

The Competitive Development Clinic is designed for athletes who have developed solid fundamental skills and are ready to apply them in faster, more competitive volleyball environments. Training emphasizes the connection between athleticism, technique, and game performance.

Players will be challenged to execute skills consistently while moving at game speed, making quick decisions, and adapting to changing situations. Training focuses on ball control, movement efficiency, attacking, defensive positioning, transition play, and overall volleyball IQ. Athletes will learn how to use their athleticism to enhance their technical skills, allowing them to play faster, more confidently, and with greater purpose.

This clinic is designed for players in one of the most critical stages of their volleyball journey, typically athletes in 8th through 10th grade. During these years, players begin facing increased competition for roster spots on school and club teams, making skill consistency, confidence, and game awareness more important than ever.

Athletes will be encouraged to compete, take risks, communicate effectively, and develop the consistency coaches look for when selecting players and building lineups. The goal is to bridge the gap between skill development and competitive performance by helping athletes apply their technique with confidence, intensity, and game-like awareness.

The Rep Lab
(All Skills 200)

The Rep Lab – Maximum Reps, Maximum Growth

The Rep Lab is built for successful players committed to outwork their competition. Players with long term goals. Our goal is for athletes to achieve maximum rep in one hour while training all core volleyball skills through fast-paced, game-like drills. Every minute is designed to maximize touches, increase consistency, and accelerate skill development.

This clinic is not recommended for beginners or low-intermediate players. Training moves at a vigorous pace and is designed for athletes who can maintain focus, intensity, and quality execution throughout the session.

Players should come mentally and physically prepared to work. The pace is demanding, the expectations are high, and there are No Easy Reps. Athletes who are not yet ready for the speed and intensity of the Rep Lab clinic may be directed to a clinic that better matches their current skill level, ensuring every player is challenged and positioned for success.

1 on 1 Private Lessons

  • Any Age
  • Any Skill Level
  • Any Skill
  • Cost: $150 Length: 1 Hour
  • Clinic Size: Limited to 1
  • Coaches: Minimum of 2

Private 1-on-1 Volleyball Training

Individualized instruction designed to accelerate improvement. Each lesson is customized to the athlete’s specific needs and also include an assistant coach to provide added support, visual demonstrations, extra feedback, and maximum reps. Video playback is used when needed to help refine technique and build consistency. Seeing the technique issue visually can often make coaching cues easier to understand and apply.

Private lessons are ideal for athletes who are struggling with a specific technique, need help identifying an issue, or require extra direction and confidence before transitioning into a small group clinic. This is a focused, short-term option designed to help players move forward successfully.

*Coach Kevin carefully evaluates each request for private lessons to ensure they are the best fit for the athlete’s needs. Because every player develops differently, he may recommend a specific clinic instead of private training when it will better support the athlete’s goals, development, and overall training experience. Email Coach Kevin@Volleylab360.com to discuss Private Lesson options.

  • Serve & Serve Receive Clinic

This clinic focuses on two of the most important skills in volleyball: serving and serve receiving. Players will receive a high volume of repetitions designed to improve confidence and ball control under pressure.

  • Defense & Passing Clinic

Great teams are built on ball control. This clinic is designed to help players improve their defensive movement, digging technique, court awareness and high percentage positioning, and passing consistency. Players will learn to move efficiently, and control difficult volleyballs while developing the confidence needed to keep rallies alive. Expect intentional direction and fast-paced drills and plenty of repetitions.

  • Setting Clinic
