2 vs. 2 Beach Volleyball!

This is NOT a league, and this is NOT indoor volleyball played in the sand. Beach volleyball is its own sport—an Olympic and collegiate sport that is fast-paced, competitive, and a lot of fun.

Players register individually and will play with and against different partners throughout the session in a Queen of the Beach round-robin format. This format encourages players to develop their skills, communication, and adaptability while playing alongside a variety of teammates.

Registration is limited to 12 players per division. This session will include a Women’s Hot Pink Racerback Tank Top.

Coach Kevin will set up and take down the nets and court lines, track scores and standings, provide coaching support, and likely throw in a few dad jokes along the way.

To encourage competitive and balanced play, divisions will be organized by age and skill level. Players who demonstrate a higher skill level may be permitted to play up with Coach Kevin’s approval.

Divisions:

  • Group B: Ages 12–15
  • Group A: Ages 14–18

The number of entries will determine the length of time each round is. If there is additional time, Coach Kevin will show players some skilled shots, strategies, along with some tips and tricks. There will be a minimum of 60 minutes of playing time.

Current Location: Marshall Park – Lansing [Address-Directions]

What is the Queen of the Beach Format?

Each game is played for points rather than wins and losses. Players compete with a different partner each round, working together to score as many points as possible before time expires.

After each round, scores are submitted, partners rotate, and play continues with a new teammate. At the end of the session, each player’s points from all rounds are totaled. The player with the highest cumulative score is crowned Queen of the Beach!

This format rewards players for being great teammates, communicating effectively, and contributing consistently regardless of who they are paired with.

Coach Kevin will track all scores and provide weekly standings updates for fun.

Specific Beach Rules & Expectations that will be enforced.

Because Beach Volleyball has unique rules, we will teach and enforce key contact rules, while gradually increasing expectations as players develop. Rules will be more relaxed in Division BB and progressively stricter toward Division AA.

Examples:

  • No setting the ball over the net: (intentional or accidental)Beach volleyball requires extremely clean hand contact. While this is less strictly enforced when passing or setting a hitter, it will be enforced if the ball is set over the net intentionally or not in all divisions. Yes, the wind could blow the ball over that is set and it still can NOT go over as the last contact.
  • No open-hand tips:

Beach Volleyball is its own sport. While it shares similarities with indoor volleyball, there are key differences. 2 vs 2 is played on a smaller court (8 meters x 16 meters) and emphasizes ball control, reading players, communicating, and conditioning.

Playing in the sand promotes functional full-body strength, focusing on explosive power, muscular endurance, and high-intensity movement especially in the legs, core, and shoulders. The unstable surface increases resistance, forcing constant engagement of stabilizer muscles, strengthening joints, and improving vertical jump ability more effectively than hard surfaces.

To keep things organized and the number of players to play, if you’re unable to attend a session you may have a substitute player (within the same age division and not currently a register player in your division) attend in your place to earn points for you. The same substitute may fill in for different players on different nights. Please notify Coach Kevin as early as possible to let him know you have a player filling your spot, or if he will need to fill your spot. If you are unable to commit to the full session, you could sign up to be a sub if we need players on a certain night. *If you sign up to be a sub, there will be a $25 fee per night if you are needed to play.
